For a BridgeJisu Kim 지난해 12월, Hall 1(@hallinfo2020)에서 열린 김지수 작가의 개인전 《다리로》를 촬영했다. 전시장 입구에는 지퍼가 달린 흰색 방수포가 설치되어 있었다. 지퍼를 열고 들어가면 외부의 빛이 차단된 공간이 나온다. 천장에는 스크린이 설치되어 있었고, 그 아래에는 매트리스와 위를 향해 영상을 투사하는 프로젝터가 있었다. Last December, I photographed Jisu Kim’s solo exhibition For a Bridge at Hall 1(@hallinfo2020). A white tarpaulin with a zipper covered the entrance. Opening it led into a space shut off from outside light. A screen was mounted on the ceiling, with a mattress below and a projector projecting video upward. 작가는 자신의 신체에 카메라를 부착하고 걸었다. 카메라는 아래에서 위를 향해 움직이는 다리와 몸, 그 너머의 풍경을 기록한다. 관객은 매트리스에 누워 천장에 설치된 스크린의 영상을 바라본다. The artist walked with a camera attached to her body. Facing upward, it recorded her moving legs and body, and the scenery beyond. Visitors lay on the mattress to watch the video on the ceiling-mounted screen. 필자는 전시를 촬영하면서 영상이 만들어내는 빛과 그 빛이 닿는 공간에 관심을 가졌다. 천장의 스크린에 나타나는 색은 바닥과 벽면에도 반사되었다. 화면이 바뀔 때마다 바닥에 비치는 색과 형태도 달라졌다. 프로젝터의 렌즈를 가까이에서 촬영했을 때는 유리 표면에 영상의 일부가 반사되어 있었다. While photographing the exhibition, I became interested in the light from the video and the space it reached. Colors from the ceiling-mounted screen reflected on the floor and walls. As the images changed, so did the colors and shapes reflected on the floor. When I photographed the projector lens up close, I noticed part of the video reflected on its glass surface. 계단을 올라가면 작은 영상과 전자 부품으로 구성된 작업들이 있었다. 투명한 용기 안에는 회로와 배선이 보였고, 다른 구조물은 상자 안에 놓여 있었다. 벽 안쪽으로 들어간 작은 스크린은 바닥에 앉아 얼굴을 가까이 가져가야 감상할 수 있었다. 그 옆에는 열린 상자가 반대로 바깥으로 나와 있었다. 공간을 오가며 두 형태가 이루는 균형이 눈에 들어왔다. 빛을 내는 장치들은 주변의 바닥과 벽면에도 색과 그림자를 만들었다. Upstairs were small video works and pieces made with electronic components. Circuits and wires were visible inside a transparent container, while another structure sat inside a box. A small screen recessed into the wall required visitors to sit on the floor and bring their faces close. Beside it, an open box extended outward. Moving through the space, I noticed the balance between the two forms. Light from the devices also cast colors and shadows on the floor and walls. 작업들은 공간의 서로 다른 위치와 높이에 놓여 있었다. 촬영하며 공간을 오갈수록 그 배치가 하나의 구성으로 보이기 시작했다. 천장에 투사된 영상과 렌즈에 맺힌 이미지, 바닥과 벽면에 반사된 빛이 있었다. The works occupied different positions and heights. As I moved through the space taking photographs, I began to see their arrangement as a whole. There was the video projected onto the ceiling-mounted screen, the image reflected in the lens, and light reflected on the floor and walls. 매트리스의 모양도 기억에 남는다. 반듯한 직사각형이 아니라 큰 직사각형에 다른 직사각형을 덧붙인 듯한 형태였다. 정면에서 바라보면 계단 아래쪽과 프로젝터의 오른쪽 끝을 향해 일부가 튀어나와 있었다. 단순한 직사각형으로 만들 수도 있었을 것이다. 위층의 작업들을 보고 계단을 내려왔을 때 그 형태가 묘하게 편안하게 느껴졌다. I also remember the shape of the mattress. It looked like a large rectangle with another rectangle added to it. From the front, part of it extended toward the foot of the stairs and the projector’s right edge. It could have been a simple rectangle. Coming down the stairs after seeing the works upstairs, I found its shape strangely comforting. 처음 영상을 볼 때는 촬영할 장면을 찾고 있었다. 2층의 작업들을 촬영하고 다시 매트리스에 누워 영상을 보니, 이제는 촬영을 마치고 작가가 걸어가는 과정을 깊게 바라보고 싶어졌다. At first, I watched the video looking for scenes to photograph. After photographing the works upstairs, I lay on the mattress and watched it again. This time, I wanted to finish shooting and focus more deeply on the artist’s walk. 촬영을 마칠 무렵 김지수 작가에게 매트리스에 누워 리모컨으로 영상을 조작하는 모습을 포트레이트로 남기자고 제안했다. 작가는 스크린 아래에 누워 자신의 영상을 바라보았다. 조금 떨어진 곳에서 전시장 전체와 함께 그 모습을 촬영했다. 스크린에는 작가의 신체에 부착된 카메라가 기록한 영상이 있었고, 그 아래에는 그 영상을 바라보는 작가가 있었다. Toward the end of the shoot, I asked Jisu Kim to lie on the mattress and control the video with a remote for a portrait. She lay beneath the screen, watching her own video. I photographed her from a distance, with the entire exhibition space in the frame. The screen showed footage recorded by the camera attached to her body.
