SenekaBomi Kim, Sion Kim, Doyub Lee, Yujin Chung 안녕하세요,어떤 말을 꺼낸다는 것이 얼마나 어려운 일인지, 새삼 느끼게 됩니다. 전하고 싶은 마음이 클수록, 오히려 말은 쉽게 막히기 마련이지요. 아무리 진심을 다해 이야기하려 해도, 무언가를 온전히 드러내는 일은 본질적으로 불가능한 일인지도 모르겠습니다. 그렇다면, 완전한 고백이란 존재하지 않는다는 전제 아래, 차라리 그 고백을 망설이는 순간에만 발화 가능한 것들에 주의를 기울여보는 일도 의미 있지 않을까요. Hello,I'm reminded of how difficult it can be to say something. The more we want to say, the more easily we get stuck. No matter how heartfelt we try to be, it may be inherently impossible to fully reveal something. So, under the premise that there is no such thing as a full confession, it would be meaningful to pay attention to the things that can only be uttered at the moment of hesitation. «세네카»는 그런 마음에서 시작된 전시입니다. ‘세네카’는 일본어 ‘세나카(背中, せなか)’에서 유래한 표현으로, ‘책등’을 일컫는 속어로 쓰입니다. 서가에 꽂힌 책이 우리를 향해 등을 돌린 채 서 있을 때, 책등은 이야기를 감추는 동시에 지시합니다. 책등은 이야기의 물리적 기둥이 되지만, 세상의 모든 책이 펼쳐지는 것은 아니죠. 어떤 이야기들은 끝내 읽히지 못한 채 닫혀 있고, 책의 무게는 침묵의 무게로 남습니다. Seneka is an exhibition that started with this idea. The term ‘seneka’ is derived from the Japanese word ‘senaka (背中, せなか)’ and is colloquially used to refer to the spine of a book. When books stand on a shelf with their backs turned toward us, the spine both conceals and indicates to the stories within. It becomes the physical pillar of the story, but not all books in the world are opened; some stories remain closed, unread, and the weight of the book remains the weight of silence. 이번 전시에 함께한 네 사람의 작업은 어떤 이야기를 재현하거나 구성하기보다는, 마치 책등처럼 조용히 이야기를 감춘 채 그 기척만을 드러냅니다. 어떤 진심은 감춰져 있기에 오히려 더 ‘진짜’일 수 있으니까요. 전시장에 놓인 흔적과 암시는 말해지지 못한 이야기의 윤곽을 그립니다. 우리는 그 흐릿한 경계를 따라 걸으며, 이해하려 할수록 멀어지는 감각에 닿게 됩니다. 이곳의 실패한 고백들, 혹은 ‘말해지지 못한 것이 있다’는 표명 뒤편에는 무엇이 존재할 수 있을까요. The work of the four artists in this exhibition does not represent or construct a story, but rather, like the spine of a book, it quietly conceals a story, revealing only its signs. The traces and allusions in the exhibition outline the contours of an untold story, as some truths are more ‘real’ because they are hidden. We walk along those blurred lines, touching on sensations that seem to slip away the more we try to understand them. What could be behind the failed confessions here, or the declaration that “there is something unspoken”? 작업들은 등을 돌린 채 조용히 선 책처럼, 끝내 말을 아낍니다. 다만 전시는, 그 앞에서 당신이 잠시 멈춰 서기를 바랍니다. 읽을 수는 없지만 어딘가 존재하는 이야기들, 저자와 독자 모두로부터 얼마간은 독립된 그 이야기들이, 당신 안에서도 조용히 열리기를 바랍니다. 보이지 않는 텍스트, 사라진 문장, 잊힌 흔적들을 가늠해보는 여정의 감각이 당신 곁에 오래 머물기를 바랍니다. 만일 이 모든 것이 책등으로만 이루어진 책일 뿐이라면, 적어도 한 순간쯤은 우리가 같은 표정으로 그 침묵을 마주할 수 있기를 바랍니다. The works are like books that stand silent with their backs turned, ultimately reticent to speak. The exhibition, however, wants you to pause in front of it. May those stories, unreadable but existing somewhere, partially independent of both author and reader, open quietly within you. I wish the sense of a journey, of tracing invisible texts, lost sentences, and forgotten traces, to linger with you. And if all of this is just a book with only a spine, I wish we could face that silence with the same expression, at least for a moment.
