Automatic

Sometimes it feels like we are living on Automatic—life that is routine and mundane—like a constantly running subway with fixed destinations.

All the works in the exhibition and book are captured in autofocus mode. Unlike photos taken using manual focus, subjects can appear blurry or indistinguishable when the camera fails to achieve focus.

This resembles us on the subway everyday. Same route, same destination, not so clear as to why we are always moving forward.

It feels like the subway is riding our lives, not us. 

Finding focus in photography and life.

Traces of deep thoughts and questions are left within photos taken over the past 5 years.

우리는 자동 속을 살아갑니다.

쉴 새 없이 달리는 지하철 천장에 붙은 노선도처럼, 우리가 가야 할 길도 자동으로 초점이 맞춰 져 있는 듯합니다.

이번 전시와 책을 통해 소개될 모든 작품은 자동 초점(Automatic Focusing)으로 촬영되었습니다.

때문에 노출과 초점이 제대로 엇나가 대상이 아예 보이지 않거나 흐릿한 사진들도 있습니다.

모든 것을 정교하게 맞춰두었다면 나오지 않았을 사진들, 깜빡 잠든 지하철에서의 생경한 도착지처럼 어딘가 우리의 삶과 닮았다는 생각이 듭니다.

사진의 초점을 그리고 삶의 초점을 어디에 어떻게 둘 것인가.

길었던 고민의 흔적을 지난 5년간의 사진들을 통해 기록합니다.
