bulgyegongjol 불계공졸(不計工拙)

"잘하고 못하고를 따지지 않는다."

"bulgyegongjol(不計工拙)" means not caring about doing things perfectly. It's the seal of Chu Sa Kim Jeong-heui, a famous calligrapher in Korea. He's known for his unique writing style, which might seem perfect based on his records. But if you actually see his writing, it's not that neat or conventional. It has its own charm. "bulgyegongjol" represents not worrying about things being good or bad, high or low, or following strict rules.

‘불계공졸(不計工拙)’은 글자 그대로 잘하고 못하고를 따지지 않는다는 뜻이다. 우리나라 최고의 명필로 불리는 추사 김정희의 인장이다. 추사체*(아래 사진 참고)라는 자신만의 글씨를 세상에 남긴 천재라는 그의 기록만 본다면 무언가 반듯하고 빈틈없는, 그런 ‘완벽한’ 글씨를 상상하게 된다. 그러나 실제 추사체를 찾아보면 전혀 그렇지 않다. 자기 멋대로 쓴 느낌이 들며 거칠고 정통을 벗어난다. 그러면서 다시 한번 보게 되는 매력이 있는 글씨다. 이렇듯 그의 예술 정신이라 할 수 있는 불계공졸은 공과 졸, 높은 것과 낮은 것, 좋은 것과 나쁜 것 등 우리가 흔히 ‘위계’를 따지는 계산을 하지 않는 것이다.

Sometimes, when someone's personality is very different or stronger than ours, we might call it "weird." But looking at it through the lens of "bulgyegongjol," this can actually be positive. In today's world, where we often care about what others think due to media influence, the idea of "bulgyegongjol" tells us to accept and embrace everything we like based on how they do things. It's about being open to what we find appealing.

사람들은 종종 누군가의 개성이 독특하고 본인보다 강하면 ‘괴상하다’는 평가를 하곤 한다. 하지만 이 또한 불계공졸의 눈으로 보면 긍정적이다. 미디어의 발달로 타인의 시선과 평가를 의식하는 현대 사회에서 그룹 불계공졸은 그들의 작업 방식을 기반으로 우리가 좋아한다고 느끼는 모든 것을 포용하라고 말한다.

The design of this exhibition involved a designer named Lee Gun-jeong(@handgloves). They wanted to create a big difference that fits with the weight of the title "불계공졸(Bugye Gongjol)". They used a font that's a bit odd and hard to read on purpose, which brings out a strong contrast. Even in the English title, they kept the Korean sound. The design has dark backgrounds and black text that's small and a bit hard to read, making you more curious. They believe this unique approach of focusing on small details instead of the whole exhibition makes their message stronger. They also made eco-bags and other items for the exhibition, and PER(@permanent.external.records) was part of this.

본 전시의 그래픽 디자인에는 디자이너 이건정(@handgloves)이 참여했다. 불계공졸이라는 제목의 무게에 걸맞지 않는 다소 엉뚱하고 알아보기 힘든 서체를 적극적으로 사용해서 영문 제목에서도(한글 발음 그대로 표기한) 드러나는 큰 간극을 드러냈다. 다소 어두운 배경에 검정 글씨를 선택, 잘 보이지 않고 읽히지 않는 크기와 형태로 인해 궁금증을 더 자아내는 시안이라고 한다. 전시의 큰 부분보다 작은 부분부터 본질적으로 접근하는 그들의 섬세함은 그들의 메시지에 힘을 더한다. 전시 굿즈로 제작된 에코백 제작에는 PER(@permanent.external.records)이 참여했다.

Five artists who share a special connection called "serendipity" are all either students or graduates of Goldsmiths, University of London. When I first met them, they were so open about their stories and interests that their age, in their twenties, didn't really show. They talked comfortably and naturally. They're all about creating art from their true selves, not forcing it, and finding value in their unique personalities. They're planning to continue the exhibition based on this idea. Their art is starting to get noticed in the art world. Let's look forward to seeing more from them and support them. During the exhibition, most of the artists will be there in person. So, I recommend visitors to share their thoughts and ask questions about the artworks with the artists.

우연인 듯 아닌 듯 불계공졸이라는 공통된 마음을 가진 다섯 명의 작가들은 모두 런던 골든스미스 대학교를 재학생 혹은 졸업생이다. 처음 그들을 만났을 때, 그들의 나이가 20대라는 사실이 느껴지지 않을 정도로 자신의 이야기와 취향을 솔직하게 표현하며 자연스럽게 이야기하는 모습에 편안함을 느꼈다. 그들은 앞으로 순수하게 'Making Art' 그 자체를 하는 것, 작위적이고 의식적인 것이 아닌 자연스럽게 우러나오는 개성들로부터 가치를 찾는 것을 바탕으로 전시를 이어나갈 것이라고 한다. 현재 예술계에서 그들의 작품들은 조금씩 주목받고 있다. 앞으로의 그들의 행보에 더 큰 기대와 응원을 보내고 싶다. 전시 기간 동안 대부분의 작가들은 전시 공간에 상주한다고 한다. 이에 관람객분들은 작품에 대한 질문이나 의견을 작가들과 끊임없이 나누어보시기를 권해드리고 싶다.
